Tavernier, Florida Keys, 3-4/ August 2011
After two days in a phenomenally calm ocean and a remarkable fight, Miami spearo Harolf Dean became the US National Spearfishing Champion for 2011.Harolf was also a member of the 2009 US National team and he was classified 10th in the World ranking after the 2009 World Championships that were held in Isla de Margarita, Venezuela. Miguel "Moharra" Guinovart, a Florida Keys spearfisherman and one of the favorites for this game was classified 2nd while Cuellar Osmany took the 3rd place of this epic contest. Very good performances were also given by Michelle Lechuga, Julian Cruz, Sergey Lopez, Eric Salado, Alex Bristol. Manny "Tito" Diaz shot he biggest fish of the contest, a 31p king mackerel. Rosibel Molina and Adel Sotolongo did an excellent appearance and won the first place in mixed teams. It is worth to mention that the game was originally won (by just 0.2 pts more) from Lazaro Caberera who got finally disqualified the second day because him and his team were carrying their spearguns loaded in the boat.Black grouper, mutton and mangrove snapper, white and black margate, triggerfish, hogfish and mackerels were the species that dominated the weighing process.
